Between Heaven and Hell (Lonesome Hearts #1)
by Jacqui Nelson
Between Heaven and Hell keeps you spellbound from the first
page until the last filled with suspense, action and adventure of two people on
the run from the hell their lives have become to a heaven they both want so
dearly. One out running his past and all he lost, the other running from her
brother and their past, both left so much pain and sorrow as they race to find
peace but you can never outrun your past as things come to a head life is held
in the balance.
When the two meet the sparks fly and tempters rise as these
two dance around each other. Hannah is a very strong women rise with the Osage
Indians that took her in when she was very young. Life has not been easy for
her with her white skin, blue eyes and blonde hair. Even though there have been
hard times due to her skin color some of the best memories she has ever had has
been with her Osage mother and sister. Now on her own trying her best to stay alive
and out of the reach of her Indian brother she is left little choice but to
join a wagon train which is not easy since she is a white women that has lived with
the Indians. Paden decided to move as far away from where is wife was killed by
Indians. He is helping his father in law take a group to California and then he
will be starting his life over on a little plot of land he hopes to build a business.
A lot happens between these pages from attacks to finding the truth as well as heartbreak,
and mean and nasty people.
Each seems to be holding secrets they do not want others to
find out about. Paden’s is a biggy and will cause him lots of pain. Hannah’s
hides hers in hope to keep her brother save. Each will have their past come up and slap
them in the face as they face their hells and maybe their deaths. Both will
have to decide what to do and the choices are not easy.
What really makes this a great story is the pace of the book
which moves fast and steady from one suspense to another keeping the reader
spellbound holding their breath. The romance is slow and steady it really
sneaks up on these two. I love the baiting between them as they drive the other
nuts. Both are bullhead, strong with a kind heart. When those they care about
are put in danger they come out flying like a bull with a red flag flying in
his face. They really complement each other and work well together. When times
get hard they pulled together and become one without even know it.
The author gives vivid details showing us how tough the life
was then and yet how strong you have to be to stay alive. There are times you
just about want to cover your eyes and most likely would if this was a movie
and other times when you say oh no run please get away. My heart was in my
mouth more than once as I read. There are many conflicts
that must be overcome as the author twists and turns right into your heart.
What a very believable story that is sad, heartbroken but is still sweet
leaving you with a smile. You will find more than one story between these pages
of people who are racist not only to the Indians but other groups. There is a
story of a broken family losing the one thing they whole dear and how they
moved on. When the ending comes I found myself asking who is Sarah and then it
came back to me all that she lost. I was
so glad to see how her life turned out it was very touching. Once you pick up
and start reading this you know why it won the Romance Writers of
America Golden Heart® Award. I will be reading again and again. I pick it for
one of my favorite reads this year. If you are looking for historical romance
full of action, excitement, which holds your attention this, is the book for
you. I was so in love with the characters and the plot I did not want it to
end.

Summary
If you like epic journeys featuring
heroes with lost souls and heroines caught between two worlds, you'll love this
edge-of-your-seat adventure that pushes pioneers to their limits and turns
enemies into lovers and families into foes on the Oregon Trail.
On a trail full of danger, will he guide her to heaven or hell?
(Kansas, 1850) Hannah knows one thing the moment she enters Fort Leavenworth—she's arrived in Hell. But inside is the means to a new life, a position as a scout on a wagon train bound for the Western Territories. All she has to do is convince the wagon master, Paden Callahan, she's the right person for the job.
After his wife was murdered by the Comanche, Paden let his work as a Texas Ranger consume him. Now he wants nothing more than to disappear into the West. Unfortunately, the one man he can't refuse has asked him to guide a wagon train full of tenderfoots across thousands of miles of Indian land. But Paden's greatest challenge turns out to be Hannah, a woman his heart won't allow him to ignore even though she was raised by an enemy he hates.
Between Heaven & Hell is the first book in the Lonesome Hearts series where America’s breathtaking but harsh frontiers forge legendary men and women. The adventure continues with Following Faith (Lonesome Hearts, book 2) currently available only in the Journey of the Heart anthology and Choosing Bravery (Lonesome Hearts, book 3). Each book is a stand-alone story, and the series can be read in any order.

From
the Author
While my novella Adella's
Enemy was my first published work, Between Heaven & Hell was
the first story I wrote. So you can imagine how honored I was when Between
Heaven & Hell won the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart®
Award (for historical romance) and the Chanticleer Laramie® Award (for Western
romance drama).
A journey between Heaven and Hell,
and back again, can begin in many places. For America's First People and their
children the strength to begin such a journey often can from legends. I hope
you enjoy the Legend of Grandfather Spider that is a part of Hannah's journey,
and eventually Paden's as well.
