The Welshman's Bride

The Welshman's Bride
by Blair Bancroft

It is a great plot some good characters a story as old as time Rhy’s wants more money to be able to build up his land, mines and help his people.  He does have money but he needs more and it is time for him to marry. Against everyone wishes he decides to get an English bride. He goes to England picks his bride and marries her. His bride has been protect and very innocent and doesn’t want to get married. She is way older than most and her parents put their foot down. She agrees they get married and things go downhill from there.

First let me say the story has more filler than I like which at times can make it a long read. Other times it gets exciting with mystery and bickering between the mother in law and Jocelyn. We only see Jocelyn side of things and at times she is childlike. There is no doubt Rhy like most men just want peace and will do almost anything to get it. Mostly he sides with his mother and lets her have the run of things. In Jocelyn defense she is coming to a new way of life finding out the ways of a married couple right before she said her I dos which is very shocking as I am sure it is for most back in those days. His mistress and child living upstairs would shock any new bride one can’t blame her for asking questions and doubting her new marriage. It was the way Rhy acted and the things he said that caused problems. When he told her to grow up after she started asking question I thought was out of line but true to form of most men who don’t want to talk about the issue. I truly think had things not been pushed he would have just went with the flow and not changed a thing. He expects poor Jocelyn to do all the bending.

It is hard to like or dislike Rhy he just wants peace, it would be hard for him not to believe his family over his wife on the issues that happened. I thought he handled them the way most of us would have. Jocelyn acts younger than 20 but that is to be expected with her life style. His mother and sister are just mean people who want her gone and do everything they can to see that happens. I found no fault with the characters they act and do normal things to keep things the way they have them. The story is built on the mystery of events with all fingers pointing back at Rhy along with Rhy and Jocelyn starting their new marriage around key people who still want the control.

The mystery is great and keeps your attention but still has too much filler taking a long time to get to the point and the effect of it. Misunderstandings, not wanting to talk about things and just trying to keep peace leads to a lot of problems with the fallout leading to major events. It isn’t a book that you could skip a lot because you would miss some key facts but still there is a lot of filler with fewer facts. It was a read that I thought was good but could have been better if made shorter. I did enjoy it and found the control issue interesting along with finding their way and learning that turning your back isn’t always the answer. I rate this as a 3.5 rounding it up to a 4. There were times I did chuckle and times that I felt sorry for one or the other. A clean read that a young teen and mother can read together for some bonding time, the marriage parts are done with class you know they happen and they enjoy it along with how a new bride would feel if those parts to not take place as they should.  I enjoyed it and do look forward to reading more of this authors work. It is worth a read to see what you think.

Summary
Although it seems likely she is being married for the magnificence of her dowry, Jocelyn Hawley accepts an offer of marriage from a Welshman. And quickly discovers she is as unprepared for marriage as she is for her new family—a mother-in-law who insists on living in Wales' Medieval past and a sister-in-law who seems to be trying to get rid of her. Jocelyn is also plagued by the problem of her husband's mistress and a series of disastrous incidents—some potentially lethal—that dog her footsteps. As she grows more alienated from her husband, who barks at her to "grow up," she finds herself the classic stranger in a strange land. Where it appears someone is trying to kill her.

Author's Note: The Welshman's Bride is a Gothic novel in the tradition of Victoria Holt, Mary Stewart, Phyllis Whitney, and my previous Regency Gothics, Brides of Falconfell, The Mists of Moorhead Manor, and The Demons of Fenley Marsh. As has happened before, I've created a heroine who has flaws, this one more than most. I hope you'll like her anyway.

By: Aubrey Wynne
Narrated by: Tom Jordan
Series: A Chicago Christmas, Book 3

A very short listen that will take your breath away about a very talent artist who isn’t in it for the money but for the art of making beautiful art. He falls in love with a woman in a painting and become obsessed with her. This is very well thought out and put together so much so you feel the love and the pain. It is a beautiful story of true love that will touch every romance read straight to your heart. I just loved it as it brought a tear to my eye and smile to my heart.

Mr. Jordan really brings this story to life for me pulling on my heartstrings making me believe in true love that is worlds apart with many centuries between them.  He really make me feel Henry’s love, his wants and needs and what drove him. I loved his character voices he really gives so much to them. You can feel the emotions in his voice. You know just what each character is feeling, you always know who is talking. There are no background noises, no volume changes and if any breaks were taken I could not tell.  This story is built around Henry and the narrator knows just what it takes to make Henry and the picture he is obsessed with seem real and come to life. Mr. Jordan delivers a very clean, clear audio that you get lost in. His natural voice is just a wonderful as his character voices. It is a voice you have no trouble listening to as he brings excitement and sorrow to Henry that holds you spellbound.

I did not want it to end, I wanted to know more about Henry and his true love.

The Prairie Doctor's Bride

The Prairie Doctor's Bride
by Kathryn Albright

This was such a delightful sweet read that really pulls the reader in with humor, showing how trying it can be for a single mother back when that was a bad thing. Poor Sylvia gave her trust to one man she knew since childhood. They moved on to start a new life with the promise to her parents they would marry with the first preach they came across. Things happen as the story goes the promise went unfilled. With her promise husband out of the picture his brother puts her in a place that isn’t good with him running his mouth and making demands. She stays to herself only coming to town only when she needs to. Your heart will go out to this lady when you see how people treat her and her son.

Nelson is making his list of what he wants in a women, we all know how that goes, list have a way of not adding up to our true feelings. Nelson wants someone to help in his practice but can’t find anyone. He decides what he needs is a wife who will take care of the home and help him in his business. You will get a chuckle at the brides to be that travels to this little town as he puts them to the test or are they putting him to the test.

Nelson is shocked when a little slip of a woman points a gun at him and demands he comes with her. This is where it gets very interesting with a cute and fun read as the author bring a little danger that will have your heart in your throat waiting for the outcome.  You have two people from different sides of the track who are attracted to each other but so very different from their up bring to the way they think and talk. Can one little lady show him what he thinks he needs isn’t what he needs at all?

Nelson has a big surprise coming his way when his mother comes to town which adds a lot to the story. At first I didn’t think too much of her and her snotty ways but she grows on you. I found myself giving her a piece of my mind thinking she is better than most. I really liked Sylvia son he was just a sweet child so full of life.  The town’s people can be a trying lot but they will grow on you. I really liked how you knew what each characters is thinking and what they are feeling. The author put a lot of time and thought into giving the reader a very entertaining read that holds your attention.  A great plot that moves fast with some excitement, thrills and a few chilling times. One that is full of surprises, heart break as two people find what they want might not be what they need. There is sadness, sorrow but a lot of smiles and laughs. I totally enjoyed this and can’t wait for the next one in this series to come out.

Dante's Gift: A Chicago Christmas

Dante's Gift: A Chicago Christmas, Book 1
UNABRIDGED
by Aubrey Wynne
Narrated by Tom Jordan

What is there not to love about this audio…it is such a wonderful delightful love story that really reaches in grabbing your heart and twisting it. At first I didn’t care too much for Kathleen she almost seemed a snob.  Here is a little old lady that just lost her sister, her only family is her grandson who is going to bring her to live with him…how sweet is that. The woman he wants to marry doesn’t cook and works long hours. This little old lady won’t live but a few more years, she is going to cook and all for you.  I understand it means less time for just them but the house is not small I am sure they could make this work with a little work. On Kathleen side the granny is old she doesn’t know how much help she will have to give the old lady, can she get around, what is her temperament like  and lord all the hugging and kissing etc . I understood where she was coming from but still I didn’t care for her that is until…..

Kathleen’s family isn’t much of a loving family oh they love her no doubt but have always been too busy to give a lot of one on one attention.  They aren’t the huggy kisss type. She is the kind of person that lets her action speak for her…who needs words. She really is torn between the quit of not wanting the old lady to come and how she should feel. Once granny steps foot in the USA things take a big turn.

Dominic is torn between the two people he loves most in the world, hoping, praying these two women cannot only get along but live under the same roof. His grandmother has always been there for him, even helped raise him, she has been a rock, there is no way he can turn his back on her, no way he will. What about Kathleen who he has asked to marry him with the answer up in the air. She just can’t live without either of these women but it seems they might not be able to live together or get along…

Mr. Jordan has fast become one of my favorite narrators he brings so much to the story from his many different character voices. He really puts thought into each character and their emotions bring them to life giving them meaning, showing us how they feel with powerful voices that leave you in no doubt how each one is feeling and what they are going through. You can hear the hurt in each character as they learn to deal with each issue at hand. I really enjoyed each of his character voices you always know who is talking he gives each character power and depth and really brings them to life. There are no background noises, no volume changes and no repeating of words, delivering a delightful smooth clear audio that you get lost in. If any breaks were taken I could not tell. Mr. Jordan’s natural voice is just a wonderful as his character voices. It is a voice you have no trouble listening to as he brings excitement and sorrow to each character that the author writes about. He has me in the palm of his hands from the first minute until the last.

What happens next put a wonderful twist on the story as one woman relives her younger years of the war and a soldier who held her heart. Kathleen gets to see a side of love she never knew was there. Granny is a wonderful story teller she not only had Kathleen but me as well spellbound through each word.  We really wanted her to go on but she kept us on hold until the next time where she took up where she left off. Her dog was something  I just love him. He didn’t trust soldiers that is all but one. War is never easy but when you fall in love with a soldier, he goes off to fight you never know if he will come home again. The dog plays a big part in this story bring together two people who love with all their hearts.

Just wait until you get to the end, if you haven’t fell in love with Dominic before you will fall head over heels at the end. My heart just melted with both Kathleen and I having tears in our eyes…I do believe Granny had some as well. The plot wonderful, very thought out, entertaining and keeping you hooked. With an audio I only listen to it when I drive or work around the house…I had trouble putting it down, I wanted to keep listening but knew I had some books I had to read as well. There is no way you can read this and not have it be one of your favorite books. I am looking forward to listening to it again in the future. Come take a journey of love, one that will touch your soul and how one little old lady and a dog over came not only the war but doubts giving the best gift of all…a love to last a life time.
