Keeping Cole's Promise
by Cheryl Harper
My Review
Cole’s heart has always been in the right place but his
brain hasn’t always been on the straight and narrow. All his life everyone has left him until one
sweet old lady took him in when his mother dropped him on her doorstep. No one
has ever loved him like his grandmother. There isn’t anything he wouldn’t do
for her. When she got sick he made a bad choice he was young and dump which got
him in a mess of trouble. Many years
later with many visits from that sweet old lady until the day she took her last
breath making Cole promise to stay out of trouble. The book starts off with him
getting out of jail and the trouble he has. Everyone deserves a second chance
but people just aren’t willing to give that.
This book really hit close to home for me. My company has
rules and we must stick to them. We deal with money, going into customers home.
Sometimes it breaks my heart to turn a person away because of their background
I would have really have liked to hire them. I feel they have learned their
lesson and need that break but the rules say no. I am not saying all are turned
away but those with major crimes are. For this reason my heart really went out
to Cole who really is a great character. He has such a warm caring heart which
is what got him in trouble to start with. Most of the town just doesn’t see it
this way, memories are long as they hold one crazy night against him. Once a
bad seed always a bad seed.
I thought this was well written with wonderful characters.
The author put a lot of thought into how people really react to a con man.
Almost from the first page road block are put up in Cole’s way. He is strong
and nothing will hold him back when he sets a goal. Rebecca had me laughing
almost from the start with how she dealt with Cole. She had to do some back
paddling more than once. She really has a very kind sweet heart just a little
misguided at times.
Here we find that sometimes there is good trouble which Cole
gets a little confused. He just wants to be left alone to keep his promise to
his grandmother. He feels if he gets messed up with troubled teens that he will
be right back where he started. What it takes is one kind sweetheart of a woman
with a temper and a very set mind to rock his world.
I really enjoyed how the author brought Cole across showing
so many misunderstanding not only with him but the town. I really liked how
Cole and Rebecca’s relation builds slow adding humor to the mix. It isn’t all
easy there are some very rough roads. I totally loved the animals and the animal
fair in town. There was one couple who adopted a dog I wasn’t very crazy about
as I am sure you will be too. This is a book with in-depth meaning which brings
out the pain, sorrow and the smiles in you. When things go wrong you know where the finger
is going to be pointed. This is about
forgiving, starting over, learning to move on, taking that first step to a
better life, helping others and giving of one’s self.
It really was heartwarming. I totally loved the ending.

Summary
It's time he lived up to his
word
Eleven years ago, Cole Ferguson made the biggest mistake of his life, but now he can finally get back on track. The first step? Nail the job at the local animal shelter and keep his head down. But working at the shelter means spending time with Rebecca Lincoln. Rebecca is beautiful and kind but she's also determined to save the world. Cole isn't about to join her. Helping Rebecca would mean breaking his promise--running toward trouble instead of staying clear. She doesn't need him anyway. How could she ever see him as more than just another charity project?
